There can be only one…Highlander game

Files under PS3, Xbox 360 | Posted by Justin |

highlander.jpgI may be wrong here, and feel free to correct me if I am, but other than an Atari Jaguar title based off the fairly bad animated Highlander series, has there ever been a Highlander game made? No? Why not?

Highlander seems like a perfect property to base a game off. You play an immortal warrior who runs around chopping heads off. What could go wrong? At the very least, it explains how in most games you have unlimited lives to try a level over and over again. Apparently Eidos finally figured this out and is delivering a Highlander titles this fall to the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

There’s some details floating about for this game, and the included screenshot here, but the bigger question to me is why are we getting an entirely new MacLeod to deal with? That’s right, the new game centers on Owen MacLeod. Why not Duncan or Conner? I know buying the likeness and voice to Christopher Lambert and Adrian Paul cannot be that expensive, and there is still that newest film, Highlander: The Source, floating around in release void. Why not use the series’ two biggest stars to help promote the game?

Apparently the actual title will take you from 2,000 years in the past to shortly into the future. Great, now we can experience the virtual birth of Jesus and a retread of Highlander 2: The Quickening. Granted, one of the appeals of Highlander has always been its period flashbacks, but there was always a modern day narrative to help carry it along. Is that being lost in favor of some more epic tale? Is that even what Highlander fans want?

Bushido Blade always seemed like the perfect engine for a Highlander title, so it will be interesting to see how Eidos pulls this game off. One of the highlights of the series were the moral dilemmas that immortality brought to the characters, so hopefully the story, being crafted by Highlander: The Series show runner David Abramowitz, will include this element which seems essential to be calling Highlander today. Well, that and some Queen music.
