The Tall Stump is the equivalent of a never released NES game finding its way to the Internet. Everything from the graphics to the “over before you know it” story introduction scream NES, but not the gameplay. The gameplay is a weird mix of the old and the new. The collecting of items feels old, but the physics based puzzles feel new. A great platformer with a spin for fans of the genre.
There really isn’t much to say about this image other than to note how pretty it is graphically (and some might argue the background character, as well). Soul Calibur was the killer-app for the Dreamcast launch all those years ago. It outshone even the excellent for its time Sonic Adventure. While Soul Calibur II was a fair success, many fans felt let down by the PS2 exclusive Soul Calibur III. Now, both fans and Namco hope that the third time is the charm for making a truly worthy sequel that again recaptures the attention of the gaming community. Balrog, the boxer with a suspicious resemblance to a distorted Mike Tyson (and yes, he was the original M. Bison), has been revealed in a new Street Fighter IV gameplay video. Even more interesting is the level he’s fighting on, which looks like it might be a raft or boat at sea.
Erik chimes in with his views on the recent rash of Street Fighter IV videos, “Capcom gave its fans a little taste of what Street Fighter IV looks like. Fans of the popular series should be impressed with the footage. The 3D animation is smooth and everything flows together. Looks like this time around Capcom will be avoiding the lumpy 3D-ness of Street Fighter EX.”
Rob Enderle over at TG Faily has a fairly interesting piece up about the potential future of Google in gaming. What, Google? Did you think Apple was the only computer company considering a move into gaming? According to Enderle, Google may very hold the future to gaming.
Cloud computing, centralized computing or whatever buzz term you’d like to use is being touted as the future of computer software. Essentially, the desktop will be the browser and all software will run remotely on computer servers. This is the same idea that was kicked around in the late 90s with the idea of workstation PCs in every home instead of desktops. Technology hadn’t quite caught up then, but with services such as Meebo and Google Documents it finally is. (more…)
Sony’s Home is that rarest of beasts. Somewhat equivalent to the Loch Ness Monster, one worries that they’re either on the cusp of a great discovery, or just a log in the water. Sony is starting to show some real meat to their service, though, as they’ve announced exclusive Content through Home for three of their biggest titles.
Warhawk will allow players to meet in a war room inside of Home before playing it. There, they will be able to use a sand table map of each level to plot strategies. Once ready, players will be able to jump straight into the game. And yes, this is a feature through Home, not simply a new one through Warhawk. So, you could always go bowling at the last minute, too. (more…)
While it was recently announced that EA had approached Take Two Interactive with $2 billion dollars to buy their company, it seems Take Two is getting around.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Take Two reported that since EA’s offer the company has received additional offers described as “informal indications of interest in a business combination.” However, no specific companies have been named.
With top titles like Bioshock and Grand Theft Auto under its umbrella, it seems Take Two feels, like Epic VP Mark Rein, that their company is worth far more than what EA would like to offer. In a press release on their website Executive Chairman of the Board Strauss Zelnick stated that EA’s offer was rejected due to providing “insufficient value to our shareholders and comes at absolutely the wrong time given the crucial initiatives underway at the Company.” (more…)
Fans of the documentary The King of Kong will tell you that it was not only one of the best documentaries of last year, but one of the best films period. Viewers became so engrossed in the story that it has led many to want to follow the continuing storyline as it develops. Don’t count on a sequel, though, as director Seth Gordon says film villain Billy Mitchell is none too pleased with the finished film.
Among other things that Gordon reveals to The Age, he states that Mitchell feels like the film portrays him unfairly. Apparently Mitchell has been contacting journalists covering the film wanting to give his own perspective on the events chronicled in the film. That doesn’t sound at all like the conniving control freak portrayed in the movie, does it? (more…)
NPD released the January sales chart for PC games and it was completely dominated by two franchises. Can you guess which two, without referring back to the title of this article? In case you couldn’t, the two franchises are Warcraft and The Sims.
What’s really weird is the number of older titles in each series that have shown staying power. The Warcraft III Battlechest and Sim City 4 Deluxe both charted in the top 20. While Sim City Societies or the newest The Sims 2 expansion packs would seem sure bets, these classics are showing some true longevity. Perhaps it’s a side-effect of their sequels bringing in new fans who want to explore the games’ past? (more…)
The battlefield series of games have not had the easiest transition from PC to console. While there has been mild acceptance for the console versions, it’s nowhere near the furor that surrounds the PC multiplayer. Electronic Arts hopes to change all of that with Battlefield: Bad Company for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The image is a real screenshot showing off the fantastic explosions and particle effects. Is it the Battlefield to finally bring the PC success over to consoles? Don’t hold your breath, but it should look pretty trying. Click on the image for a full sized version.
No, this web game has nothing to do with Pearl Jam, but it does make for a nice allusion. And truth be known, if you play the game while listening to Pearl Jam you might have an out-of-body experience. Otherwise, though, Spin the Black Circle is just a really fun and clever physics based puzzle game. Guide a ball through spiked filled mazes by not moving the ball, but the maze itself. Okay, so it is sort of a simplified Super Monkey Ball, but who would complain about more Super Monkey Ball?
