First, let’s get over with the heartbreaking news. The protagonist of Portal, Chell, is not the mother of Half-Life 2 protagonist Alyx. Well, that might have been of some contention if it panned out so, but Gabe Newell clears that one in a fairly definite manner in an interview with Games for Windows magazine.
Now that such pesky paternity issues are cleared up, the more interesting question is where exactly does Portal fit into the Half-Life world? Newell has an answer, sort of. In the same interview he states,
The interesting thing about Portal is that we know who the protagonist, Chell, is, and we’d already planned that character’s part in something that occurs later. With Portal, we sort of opportunistically said, “Oh, she fits in here. This makes sense.”
Saying that they already know who the main character is as, well, a character and also hinting that she will turn up later seem to hint at bigger plans other than just a Portal 2 cameo. Indeed, it would seem to confirm the Half-Life 2: Episode III connection that many have guessed at since the first piece of cake. If Portal is to crossover at some point with Half-Life, then what will come of the portal gun? It seems a fine follow-up to the classic gravity gun, but one would have to wonder how it would fair in a more “open” game environment?
