Gabe Newell hints at Portal crossover with Half-Life

Files under PS3, Xbox 360 | Posted by Justin |

portal.jpgFirst, let’s get over with the heartbreaking news. The protagonist of , Chell, is not the mother of 2 protagonist Alyx. Well, that might have been of some contention if it panned out so, but Gabe Newell clears that one in a fairly definite manner in an interview with Games for Windows magazine.

Now that such pesky paternity issues are cleared up, the more interesting question is where exactly does fit into the world? Newell has an answer, sort of. In the same interview he states,

The interesting thing about is that we know who the protagonist, Chell, is, and we’d already planned that character’s part in something that occurs later. With , we sort of opportunistically said, “Oh, she fits in here. This makes sense.”

Saying that they already know who the main character is as, well, a character and also hinting that she will turn up later seem to hint at bigger plans other than just a 2 cameo. Indeed, it would seem to confirm the 2: Episode III connection that many have guessed at since the first piece of cake. If is to crossover at some point with , then what will come of the gun? It seems a fine follow-up to the classic gravity gun, but one would have to wonder how it would fair in a more “open” game environment?
