You just can’t keep a good rumor down. For years now people have speculated that Apple would at some point enter the gaming market. A recently revised trademark to include gaming devices would seem to add legitimacy to such rumors.
The trademark filing calls for “hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games.” That may be a mouthful, but what does it mean for you?
The Apple iGame has long been the rumored device’s branding, but would Apple really muddy the waters with yet another new device? Isn’t the appeal of the iPhone and iPod Touch that they integrate almost all portable devices? Would consumers really want another device from Apple to carry around? We delved into this in a recent piece on the myth surrounding the Apple iGame.
Whatever the outcome, it seems clear that Apple has at least an eye on the gaming market. Where this will lead them long term is anyone’s guess, but the potential of an Apple portable game system certainly makes things much more interesting for Sony and Nintendo. How long could Sony hold out in the face of Apple from releasing a PSP2?
