kotor.jpgA new investor’s report indicates that the : (KOTOR) license has reverted back to Bioware, who is in turn working on a title with the license. That’s great news to and RPG fans alike. It’s also great news to everyone who felt the sequel was a rushed cash-in on the original.

So, is this confirmation of the rumored MMO game? Not quite. The same report indicates that Bioware is working on a separate, untitled MMO. Of course, they could be developing separate single and multiplayer versions of the KOTOR, but that seems unlikely. Instead, it is much more likely that the upcoming KOTOR sequel will feature play of some sort, just not a persistent universe.

That’s probably a good idea. While World of Warcraft continues to consume the hearts of souls of gamers worldwide, there is a limited market for such titles. Only so many people will pay each month to play a game and only so many people even have the time to commit. Doubt it? Microsoft doesn’t, as they recently cancelled their Marvel Comics based MMO for similar reasons.

What can one expect from a next-generation version of the KOTOR universe? Think Mass Effect, with lightsabers. Seriously, did you think Bioware was going to let that game engine go to waste? Still, it will be a little odd seeing a KOTOR title in the same vein as Mass Effect, as it seems pretty clear it was heavily inspired by in the first place. At least there’s one thing you can count on with new parent company , the game will be ported to every imaginable system.
