Dream On? No, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is offficially announced

guitar_hero.jpgLet the milking of the Guitar Hero franchise begin (if you think it hasn’t already). Rumored for a good while now, Activision has officially announced Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will be coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2. To celebrate the announcement of the game, one of Aerosmith’s biggest hits, “Dream On,” will be free to download for Guitar Hero 3 owners on Xbox Live and the Playstation Network this weekend, February 16-18.

The game, slated for a June 2008 release, will feature Aerosmith songs spanning the bands entire 38-year history. According to Activision, “Gamers will experience Aerosmith’s GRAMMY® winning career, from their first gig to becoming rock royalty, in a way that no other entertainment vehicle offers.” This isn’t to say that all songs will be by Aerosmith in the game, because Activision again clearly points out in the press release that as you get further into the game, you will unlock songs from artists that Aerosmith has been inspired by artists that Aerosmith has performed with.

Steven Tyler, the band’s singer, reiterated this statement in a more meaningful way. His quote is as follows, “”Any band that can go from ‘Don’t Want to Miss A Thing’ (Aerosmith’s #1 smash hit) to the ass-kicking ‘Sweet Emotion’ to the cheekiness of ‘Love in an Elevator,’ to the classic ballad ‘Dream On’ shows why Activision chose us to headline this game based on the diversity of the Aerosmith catalog. Not only is songwriting a bitch, but then it goes and has puppies.”

This is great news for fans of the band, as Aerosmith is a very popular band, selling over 150 million albums worldwide to date. What about those who aren’t Aerosmith fans, but loved the Guitar Hero series? Only time will tell us where this series is going next. This could be a huge hit and keep the music/rhythm genre booming. Or, it could be a huge flop and hurt the genre a lot. One thing’s for sure, I think we all hope that Activision doesn’t turn this into the next Tony Hawk series.
