paramount.jpgGames are one area the major companies have yet to quite figure out. While the third party gaming arena is still dominated by mostly game centric companies, it appears more and more that conglomerates are going to force their way in. Hopefully this attempt is more successful than their attempt in the 1990s.

Paramount is the latest giant to ponder a move into gaming territory. They would join Warner Brothers and Sony (obviously) in the increasingly crowded market. This comes from an MCV interview with Paramount Digital’s general manager of worldwide distribution, Alex Carloss. Carloss sounds quite excited about the possibilities of Paramount’s move into gaming, saying

Broadly speaking, it’s exciting to work for a company that has a portfolio that crosses film, interactive entertainment and online – and that’s a strength of position that [Paramount parent] Viacom certainly holds. Paramount is very, very excited about the growth in the interactive entertainment market. I’m sure you’re going to see an awful lot more from Paramount in this space.

Paramount would join with fellow Viacom underling MTV in devoting energy to gaming. MTV has already been quite successful with their backing of , and has said it plans to be serious about their gaming agenda. In the long run one has to wonder what this all will mean for the smaller game studios gamers have grown to love over the years? Could gaming be on the cusp of a buyout and spending spree unlike it has ever known?
