
Yes, that headline is probably shocking to most. There’s a Mexican gaming market? Most Americans probably don’t think of Mexico much as a place to sell superfluous consumer goods such as video games. Research and Markets, on the other hand, claim it’s the beginning of something big.
In their Mexico Video Games Market Report 2007, Research and Markets claims that the Mexican gaming market could hit $1 billion by the end of the decade mostly thanks to YUGS. The report defines YUGS as young unmarried gamers, and there has been a significant rise in their numbers in recent years.
Between 1995 and 2005 the average age of the first marriage of Mexican men and women rose by five years for both sexes. This is important, as in Mexico it is quite common for unmarried adults to continue living with their parents until their first marriage. This obviously allows for a lot of disposable income.
So, despite preconceived generalizations some Americans might hold, it seems possible that Mexico might be the next major emerging game market. Would that cause a shift in the development of games? Could gamers expect a lucha libre game soon? It already seems to be the trend, with major fighting franchises such as Virtua Fighter and Street Fighter adding Mexican wrestling characters recently. For the gaming market, such olive branches to Mexicans is muy bueno business sense.
