Classic Sidewinder level returns to Halo 3 as Avalanche

If you ever played much of the original ’s multiplayer, then you know Sidewinder was easily one of its best levels. It was a great environment for bases combat. There have been calls for a remade version in both 2 and 3, though now it looks like fans are finally getting their wish.

The Legendary Map Pack set to be released soon will include a new level entitled Avalanche, which bears more than a minor resemblance to Sidewinder. Of course, it’s been given the obligatory coat of new paint, but for classic fans it’s a very late Christmas present. It’s about time, too.

While porting any level over into a new game obviously takes time and effort, one has to wonder why it seems to take so much effort. Many classic maps are all but forgotten now when they would still work perfectly well in the new 3 engine. Why not simply port them over? Even if balancing them is the issue, they could always just be left to custom games and left out of matchmaking.
