Five annoying habits of video game forums

nerd

If you’ve ever ventured into the deep, dark abyss that is most video game forums (not all, mind you) then you know there’s some pretty crazy posters.  More so than that, however, there’s some incredibly annoying tendencies that repeatedly rear their ugly little heads.  Collected here, for your edification, are five of the most annoying.

Anything you can list, I can list better
Ever read one of those threads about which game has the best music?  Most posters will serve up one or two select cuts.  Perhaps it’s Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI?  Whatever the case, most seem to kind of follow the unwritten rules of the thread.

Not so with the annoying poster.  They’ll list thirty games, at the least, with each suggestion being more obscure than the list.  You listed a Final Fantasy title?  Ha!  They know at least ten RPGs with better soundtracks–some never released outside of Japan!

I’m turning Japanese, I really think so
Again, any discussion of best games or best stories will invariably lead to the guy who has played every obscure Japanese game unknown to man.  You really like Super Metroid?  That’s cool, but he played Obscuro Go Go Racer–the inspiration for Super Metroid.  You’d know that if you were really into gaming.

You might be a fanboy if…
Of course, the standard modus operandi for any argument on a forum is to label the other person a fanboy of some particular system.  The sad part is that this is often true of both parties.  Still, it gets a little silly when people take the argument to extremes.  Have you ever heard someone be called an Atari Jaguar fanboy?  Obviously you have hung around enough forums…in Japan, like the hardcore.

Meet Joe Six Pack
Get over the term "Joe Six Pack."  Seriously.  It isn’t funny, and it doesn’t particularly describe anyone or anything.  It’s such a nebulous term constantly fluctuating with every minor variable.  The same goes for the terms "casual" and "hardcore" gamer.

That game was easier than easy
Yes, we all get it.  You beat Metal Gear Solid your first time without dying once.  You never used a strategy guide, ever.  You troll gaming FAQs looking for errors to correct, or perhaps simply to laugh at their very existence.  You are a god amongst gaming mortals.

You also likely have way too much free time on your hands and have never ventured outside of the basement.  Ouch, cliched?  Sure, but in some cases true.
