Online game rental service expanding

 PS3

No, this isn’t the service you American gamers are thinking of, but instead the UK’s biggest online game rental service.  That would be WhyBuyGames.co.uk.  So how are they expanding?  By adding discs to their selection.

So, isn’t this kind of a weird blurring of lines?  Sure, drives are built into every PS3 and it was a major cause for the format’s winning of the high-def format wars.  But still, both last and current generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft could read DVDs, and yet many resisted blurring that edge.  What’s the difference?

Many consumers are desperate for affordable high definition content.  After dropping $2,000 or more on a new television, many are looking for the content anywhere they can get it and they don’t want to have shell out big cash, either.  In the case of Blu-rays, that can be difficult as many run $35 or more.  Of course, there’s also the possibility that this is another sign that is becoming the next UMD for Sony–a video game system only format.
