New this week on Wii Virtual Console

No, this is not the Double Dragon game you are looking for.  Yes, it is the one you remember as a kid on the NES and not the arcade version you wished it was at the time.  More disappointing, however, is that it’s not the vastly superior Double Dragon II.  Oh well, perhaps another day.  Still, the original is a decent game, but with so many better brawlers out there, such as Double Dragon II and Final Fight, its fond memories are best left in the past.

New this week on Wii Virtual Console

How do you choose between two classic titles?  One is very likely the ultimate beat-em-up of the 8-bit era, and the other is the least appealing of a classic RPG franchise.  Oh wait–never mind.  River City Ransom is the clear choice this week.  The fact that a decent, comparable follow-up hasn’t made its way into the modern era is beyond belief for one of the NES’s true cult classics.

Wii gets even more compact with personal seven inch screen

What does the diminutive Wii need more than anything?  Not so fast with talk of a hard drive!  No, what it really needs is its own personal seven inch screen.  That way you can feel even more like a giant while playing it!

Chinavision has head your cries and delivered just such a product.  The seven inch monitor is similar to those that have been released in the past for the PS2 and Xbox.  It conveniently (at least in pictures) attaches to the system, features stereo speakers, auxiliary AV connectors, and 480×234 resolution.

The future of the Wii2 may already be showing

Johnny Lee is a nerd’s nerd.  He wasn’t simply satisfied with owning the hard to find Wii.  No, Mr. Lee wanted to make a cool little gaming system even cooler.  And he succeeded.  That’s a nerd’s nerd.

Specifically, Mr. Lee is behind the famous tech demo using a pair of glasses to make the Wii present actual 3D images using head tracking software.  In turn, this technique will now be used in Electronic Arts Boom Blox title.  Not too shabby Mr. Lee, but he wasn’t done there.  A new tech demo shows off using the Wii as a virtual whiteboard, a use that Lee notes could save schools thousands of dollars.  Again, not too shabby.

Mario Kart Wii French commercial

Files under News, Wii | Leave a Comment

Sure, this would be a great place to make some low-brow joke at the expense of the French, but this is Game With A Brain–not The New York Times!  Anyway, this new commercial for Mario Kart Wii is actually pretty fun, regardless of where it hails from.  You’ve got to hand it to Nintendo, they certainly have their advertising focus together better than Sony or Microsoft.

New this week on Wii Virtual Console

It was a little disturbing for many gamers a few years back when Sega went third-party and their franchises started popping up on Nintendo’s consoles.  It almost felt kind of dirty, like something you knew just wasn’t supposed to be.  It feels just as weird today seeing the parade of Sega games appearing on the Wii’s Virtual Console, including this week’s two additions.  It’s like cats and dogs living together.

New this week on Wii Virtual Console

Ever wondered what it would be like to go back in time and visit a Chuck E. Cheese circa 1998?  If so (and who hasn’t?), then Cruis’n USA will get you there.  The arcade racer that wowed many when it debuted, only to be quickly overshadowed by far superior racers on the system.

Cruis’n USA
(Nintendo 64®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points)

Ever felt like driving to the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore and the White House in one day? Well then, gear up to put your racing skills to the test in a frantic trip across the United States, following a route that you won’t find on any map. Whether it’s the rolling hills of Appalachia, the flowing cornfields of Iowa or the crowded tunnels below Chicago, you’ll find yourself too focused on the intense racing action to worry about the scenery. Get started by picking from a garage full of cars to find the one that best suits your style—if you’re good enough, you’ll even find a few hidden ones to round out your selection. Then choose one of three different playing perspectives and get ready to hang on tight. With five difficulty levels, the ability to remove traffic or other racers, and two- player simultaneous racing, it’s enough to make you forget all about finding that next rest stop. Just watch out for the cows, OK?

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith gets a trailer

Files under News, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 | Leave a Comment

There isn’t a whole lot that can be said for the new Guitar Hero: Aerosmith expansion.  The name basically explains it all.  However, it does feel a bit like the Guitar Hero is just gouging fans when Rock Band allows for so much downloadable content without having to purchase entirely new games at full price.  Perhaps some people just really, really want a digital Steven Tyler?  Perhaps those same people really, really liked Revolution X.

The Master comes home to the Wii’s Virtual Console

The Wii is getting some new Virtual Console games. “Alright!” cry the fanboys, who run to their Wii. Will it be some-school SNES or N64 games? Nope. How about some rare Sega Genesis games to hold us over until Mario Kart? Nope. The new Virtual Console games are going to be Sega Master System games.

Most don’t remember the Master System as it was Sega’s first attempt at a home console, in 1986. Graphically superior and more powerful then the NES it sold well in Europe and South America, but sold poorly in North America and Japan, due to Nintendo’s hold on the market.
