First look at Gears of War 2 gameplay

Files under News, Xbox 360 | Leave a Comment

The original Gears of War is mostly a take it or leave it kind of game.  With all the hype surrounding it, many were turned off by its less-than-revolutionary gameplay.  Still, those people were obviously in the minority as the game sold a ton and helped cement the Xbox 360’s position ahead of the PS3 for a while to come (no such luck with the Wii).

The best of Halo 3 betrayals

Files under News, Xbox 360 | Leave a Comment

If there’s one thing that keeps Halo 3 fresh, it’s the opportunity to kill your teammates in wonderfully wild, inventive manners.  Yes, your teammates.  Killing the other guy is so last gen.  Anyway, here are two of the best betrayal videos out there.

Sure, LucasArts continues to taunt long time fans by not releasing a new title in the TIE Fighter series, but The Force Unleashed is looking to be a nice peace offering.  The physics heavy Jedi-powered action title is shaping up to be one of the major titles of this year, if early looks are any indication.  And now, it finally has a release date.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith gets a trailer

Files under News, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 | Leave a Comment

There isn’t a whole lot that can be said for the new Guitar Hero: Aerosmith expansion.  The name basically explains it all.  However, it does feel a bit like the Guitar Hero is just gouging fans when Rock Band allows for so much downloadable content without having to purchase entirely new games at full price.  Perhaps some people just really, really want a digital Steven Tyler?  Perhaps those same people really, really liked Revolution X.

Have you recently been bored with all the old content on Xbox Live Marketplace?  Has one more viewing of a South Park episode from four years ago left you cold?  Well, then Microsoft may have some good news for you.  Original shows are coming to Xbox Live.

What exactly are these original shows?  Well, that’s not really clear at the moment.  Peter Safran will apparently produce the content through his company Safran Company (yes, very clever).  So, what exactly does his name mean?  He works with the guys who brought the world Epic Movie and the woman who brought the world My Big Fat Greek Wedding.  Yes, not exactly stellar credentials.

Resident Evil 5 footage is scary beautiful

Files under News, PS3, Xbox 360 | Leave a Comment

After the successful rebirth of the Resident Evil franchise in Resident Evil 4, can anything truly wow as much?  Better graphics alone won’t do it, right?  Well, not so fast.  The latest footage from Resident Evil 5 now only wows, but it shows a refinement of the franchise, even if it is just in degrees.

Cheating is a splendid thing.  It allows you to get ahead without any of the effort of those you hope to emulate.  No wonder so many people do it.  Microsoft, however, is not a fan.

That’s why as of Tuesday, Microsoft struck back (yes, the evil empire struck back).  Those who had been artificially inflating their Gamerscore and Achievement totals found a nasty little surprise.  Microsoft reset them.  That’s right, all the way to zero.

If you ever played much of the original Halo’s multiplayer, then you know Sidewinder was easily one of its best levels. It was a great environment for bases combat. There have been calls for a remade version in both Halo 2 and 3, though now it looks like fans are finally getting their wish. (more…)

Wii shortages to continue while PS3 and Xbox 360 get price drops

Files under News, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 | Leave a Comment

gamestop.gifGameStop, that bastion of used-game goodness, recently revealed some fairly expected news for gamers. In an investor conference call, GameStop executives revealed that Wii shortages will likely last the next six months, while both the Xbox 360 and PS3 look headed for $50 price drops.

Executives stressed that the price cuts were not official but simply their speculation. They also happened to speculate about a $30 price cut on the PS2. None of this is too surprising, as people have been expecting such a cut on the PS2 for nearly a year now. The Xbox 360 and PS3 price cuts would go a long way toward getting both closer to a mass market price of $200-250. (more…)

Microsoft and EA sign massive in-game advertising deal

Files under News, Xbox 360 | 2 Comments

ea_games.jpgEver so slowly, the two gigantic balls of clay meld into one. Soon, will anyone be able to tell where one ends and the next begins? If you’re the type to freak out and cite 1984 when just about anything in business happens, it’s probably time to get out your tin foil hat. Microsoft and Electronic Arts are in business together.

Microsoft owned subsidiary Massive Inc. and Electronic Arts have inked a deal for in-game advertising in EA games until through 2010. Massive Inc. is an advertising company specializing in placing ads within online games. Basically, the type of ads you see randomly changing in games from time to time. The deal is an extension of a current deal, but it will greatly expand the number of titles EA places Massive’s ads in. (more…)
