If you haven’t picked up Call of Duty 4 yet, then it may actually be in your best interest to continue waiting. Word is that Activision will release a Game of the Year edition sometime in April. The special edition will feature new packaging as well as the ability to download the new map pack for free.
So far the special edition of the game has only been confirmed for the Xbox 360, though it would seem likely a PS3 version would be released, too. The whole idea of special editions of console games seemed entirely foreign just a few years ago. That all has changed as more games get the special edition treatment such as Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3. (more…)

The general economy may be down, but video game sales are up in a big way. Compared with the same period last year, games sales are up 40%. This is obviously a very good sign for the industry’s ability to weather an economic downturn.
Of interesting note among the numbers, the PlayStation 3 topped the Xbox 360 for a second month in a row. Of course, there are apparent shortages of the Xbox 360 in stores, but it’s still a good bit of positive news for Sony’s flagship console. The Wii, of course, continued to sell the best despite its scarcity in stores. (more…)

For every positive, there is always one negative. In the case of Metal Gear Solid 4 the positive is the final confirmation of when Snake’s swan song will arrive, but the negative came in a recent interview with MGS creator Hideo Kojima.
In the interview Kojima revealed that certain features had to be cut from the game due to the 50 gigabyte size of the Blue Ray disc for the PS3. It wasn’t indicated what features would be lost but it had been indicated earlier that due to size limitations there would be no Japanese voice track on the American version of the game, and vice-versa. With recent rumors of Sony releasing a 120 gigabyte and 160 gigabyte PS3 with much anticipated Dual Shock controllers, it was no surprise to see that the 80 gig model was visibly absent from their website. The 40 gigabyte system looked depressingly lonely as it sat waiting for an announcement of who else would be joining it. However, if you really do some digging, you can find the 80 gig version which still comes with a copy of Motorstorm.
The question is, though, what is the benefit of the increased amount of memory? With recent titles like Devil May Cry 4 requiring a lengthy install onto the PS3’s hard drive just to play the game we may see the 120 gig become the standard for the PS3.
While there are pros and cons to everything, the pros in this case being the addition of Dual Shock controllers, this may alienate a large majority of gamers who couldn’t afford the PS3 in its current state. The 360, on the other hand, can play titles like DMC4 without the 20 minute install and with the minor annoyance of brief loading times.
Sony is expected to announce if there will indeed be a new SKU for the PS3 at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco.

Capcom has announced that as of Saturday, Feb. 9th, one million Xbox Live gold members have downloaded the DMC4 demo since it’s release on January 24th. That’s over 25,000 downloads per day, undoubtly impressing Capcom as they reported it on their official blog. Microsoft has informed Capcom that this is the first demo of 2008 to hit a million downloads, as well as one of the fastest demos to hit the million mark in the history of Xbox Live.
This is quite the feat, but all that matters right now is how many of these million plus demo players actually bought or will buy the game for the Xbox 360? It seems the demo may have had an impression on some UK players as DMC4 is the top selling game there. The Xbox 360 version accounted for 61% of total sales. However, Japanese sales figures are quite different as first day sales indicate that the PS3 version of DMC4 outsold the Xbox 360 version 5-1; with the PS3 version selling 140,000 and the Xbox 360 version selling 30,000. Not bad sales for Microsoft in Japan, but PS3 sale numbers are very good there and will continue to rise. Here in the United States, we don’t release weekly sales figures, only monthly, so we will have to wait until March to get February sales figures. (more…)
