Sure, this would be a great place to make some low-brow joke at the expense of the French, but this is Game With A Brain–not The New York Times! Anyway, this new commercial for Mario Kart Wii is actually pretty fun, regardless of where it hails from. You’ve got to hand it to Nintendo, they certainly have their advertising focus together better than Sony or Microsoft.
If you’re going to design a cartoon racing game, it should be required by law that one level takes place on a roller coaster track. Really, is there anywhere you’d rather race? Perhaps the bottom of the ocean. This image of Mario Kart Wii showcases what appears to be a roller coaster inspired mine cart level for Nintendo’s new flagship racer. Is it the spark of originality that Mario Kart needs to keep from getting stale? Click on the image for a full sized version.
The general economy may be down, but video game sales are up in a big way. Compared with the same period last year, games sales are up 40%. This is obviously a very good sign for the industry’s ability to weather an economic downturn.
Of interesting note among the numbers, the PlayStation 3 topped the Xbox 360 for a second month in a row. Of course, there are apparent shortages of the Xbox 360 in stores, but it’s still a good bit of positive news for Sony’s flagship console. The Wii, of course, continued to sell the best despite its scarcity in stores. (more…)
If you haven’t heard of Shards of Death 5 yet, you will. Still, it seems a real shame that this poor little fella couldn’t find a role for himself in the most anticipated sequel of the year. Oh well, there’s always the chance that with Mario Kart Wii there will be a resurgence in the popularity of kart racers and the gaming world might finally get what it has been asking for, Shards of Death Kart Grand Prix.
This new gameplay video of Mario Kart Wii does a couple of things. First, it shows off many of the new tracks in the game. They look beautiful, and while the Wii may not be the graphical powerhouse that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are, it more than holds its own with this title. Second, it showcases the new trick system and motorcycles. Both look, well, interesting. Neither is exactly sellable from this video alone, but at least they don’t look broke, either.
Mario Kart is oddly one of those Nintendo franchises that fans love to complain about, yet continually buy. The tweaking between each new iteration can be maddening to many fans, but it is what keeps the franchise fresh. Still, some fans weren’t quite happy with Nintendo’s development track and they released their own version for the PC. Based on the Source engine that powers Half-Life 2, Mario Kart Source may not be much to look at, but the gameplay sure seems to be there in spades.
The Mario Kart Wii news has been spewing like a geyser as of late. First, was the news of the game’s imminent release. Then, news of Miis and online play. Now, comes news of what many had pondered; exactly how many players can battle against each other at once? The short answer? Eight.
The longer answer comes from Jeux France who posted an image (posted above) of the game’s battle mode featuring eight characters listed on the game’s mini-map. So, what does this mean for the game’s addictive multiplayer? Not much, actually. Eight players will be plenty to enjoy the battle mode with, and it certainly could have been worse. Recall Excite Truck and how it only allowed two player races? (more…)
The Wii has been an unquestionable retail success so far. No one would have expected over a year after its launch it would still be difficult to find in stores, and it would still be outselling both the PS3 and Xbox 360. In the mindshare of so-called hardcore gamers, however, it has had a much rougher time. “Where are the games for us?” they cry out. The problem is that it’s rather difficult to see with both eyes closed.
The Wii has suffered through a drought of games on par with the PS3 and Xbox 360 in their first years of life. Not only those systems, but it has actually fared better than some classic systems such as the PS2 and N64. So, what is everyone complaining about? While the games are there, they aren’t exactly there the way many ways would want.
While Super Mario Galaxy was a true AAA title, many gamers were disappointed not by a lack of innovation or decent control, but instead by a lack of high-resolution textures. Similar criticism was leveled against The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Still, many hardcore players seem to miss the point that right there they have three AAA titles within the first year of a console’s release. The fact that the Wii is not the hardware equivalent of the PS3 or Xbox 360 is simply something they’ll have to get over, or miss quality games. This is the same as bringing one’s self to term with the concept that the DS and PSP will never be the graphical equal of their big brother consoles. (more…)
