Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles ships one million plus

resident_evil_umbrella.jpgWhen it was first announced that an original Resident Evil title would be coming to the Wii there was much excitement among Nintendo fans. That tapered off considerably when it was announced it would an on-rails shooter subtitled Umbrella Chronicles. Then it rose again when gamers actually saw the game in action, and even more so once they played it. Now, Capcom is announcing they have shipped over one million copies of the title worldwide.

That may not sound like a lot in some ways, but you have to place it in perspective. First, it was released within the first year of a console’s lifespan. Second, it’s a mature title on a system overrun with family and party games. One million shipped is doing pretty good, and even better, it bodes well for the idea of more original Resident Evil titles on the Wii. Capcom has already announced a port of Resident Evil 0 to the console. (more…)

Video games are not quite as mature as you might think

Are video games really all sex and violence? Not according to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). It recently released its ratings numbers for 2007 and revealed that only 6% of titles received a Mature rating.

In fact, games in general got very acceptable ratings with 74% receiving an Everyone rating of some form. Another 20% of titles received the Teen rating. So, what does all of this mean to gamers?

For one, it means that mature games simply aren’t being made, despite the aging of the gaming audience. Whether this is due to fear of social backlash or limiting a game’s potential market is debatable. Still, this is hardly the future of games many pictured fifteen years ago after the success of Mortal Kombat and Doom. (more…)
