No, it did not live up to its billing. Yes, it is still an incredibly fun game. But more than being a sim game, Spore echoes many titles on this year’s top ten list by being a creation engine. Half the fun of the title can be had from creating different creatures, homes, ships, etc. through an incredibly intuitive interface. Not what you wanted from the game? Perhaps not for you, but it hardly keeps it from being a good game, or in this case one of the best of the year.
Ever since EGM ran their infamous Simon Belmont in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gag, the gaming world has been obsessed with April Fool’s Day. This has, sadly, led to many groan inducing jokes over the years, some of which can be credited to EGM (you can’t win them all). Still, each year brings the promise of some actually good jokes and this year has delivered.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is shaping up to be one of those games that define a console generation. If it should so manage, it would be quite a feat, as no Metal Gear game has really done so before (with perhaps Metal Gear Solid 2 coming closest). This newest trailer features a walkthrough of the game with narration explaining many of the new game mechanics. How does it look? Smooth and crisp, and like the console seller for the PS3 people expect it to be.
In the interview Kojima revealed that certain features had to be cut from the game due to the 50 gigabyte size of the Blue Ray disc for the PS3. It wasn’t indicated what features would be lost but it had been indicated earlier that due to size limitations there would be no Japanese voice track on the American version of the game, and vice-versa. In the autumn of 2004 the gaming world was witness to the third title in the epic saga of Solid Snake hitting the shelves while simultaneously hearing news that the fourth title would be on its way. This resulted in a worldwide sigh of ecstasy from fans of the series and immediately speculation began about when the game would arrive.
Then in 2005 at E3 a bit more information was revealed with press booklets containing character concept art and a giant screen showing only “MGS4″ and “PS3″. The past four years have been a vicious waiting game for those waiting to see the final chapter in Snake’s story. We saw a trailer for the game at E3 2006, then the next year another trailer with a bit more to show off, but the sad news that the game would be delayed until 2008. (more…)
Al De Leon, PR Manager of SCEA, posted on the official Playstation blog that a special PS3 bundle would be released to coincide with the release of MGS4 in North America. It will include one 80GB PS3, a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and the Dualshock 3 controller. You can get this bundle for the very reasonable price of $499.99. This could be a big move for Sony to move even more consoles with the release date upcoming, but it’s not clear why they announced it so early. Now, instead of consumers buying PS3’s up to MGS4’s release, they can just opt to wait for the bundle.
De Leon also posted that a new special edition PSP would be released in June. The fire truck red PSP will be released in June. It will feature the face of Kratos on the back of it to signify that it is, indeed, a God of War PSP. For $199.99, you will receive: The limited edition red PSP, God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP game, a voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops for free from the PS Store, and Superbad on UMD video. Bet you didn’t see that one coming. Now you can get your God of War and McLovin fix all at once.
In a recent BBC News piece Darren Waters revealed many tidbits of joy for Sony fans. First, was some juicy details on the next Motorstorm. More importantly, though, he revealed work a super secret title within Sony that will change the face of gaming in 2009. What could the game be? Well, the one thing known is that it isn’t Killzone 2.
Still, what the mega secret title turns out to be isn’t nearly as important as what Sony has started. The first year of Sony’s console was filled with a sense of dread. The Blu-Ray format was in a brutal war and it seemed the Xbox 360 was quickly walking away with this console generation confidently in pocket. Then things began to change. A price drop for the PS3 and Blu-Ray’s winning of the HD war changed Sony’s outlook overnight. (more…)
