One supposes that Midway had the trailer for this title all ready to go about two weeks ago, but then somebody pointed out no one would take it seriously launching around April 1. Now, two weeks later and there’s hardly a soul that can believe it, still. Seriously, while comics are known for their bizarre crossovers and match ups, was this one anyone was really asking for? And what happened to that rebooting of the Mortal Kombat franchise with a hard edge that had long ago been lost? Is the Green Lantern the answer to a hard edge?
If you happen to own Midway stock, now would be a good time to sell it. In fact, about a year ago probably would have been the best time. Despite a huge loss in 2006, Midway could not course correct in 2007 and bled another $97.4 million. Things do not look good for the house that Mortal Kombat built.
Things aren’t going to be getting any better anytime soon, either. Midway expects another loss for the first quarter of 2008. Yes, this is starting to get into Atari and Sega territory. This Is Vegas looks like one of those quick cash-in poker gamers that flooded the market in recent years mixed with a nice helping of Grand Theft Auto. That’s actually not a bad idea for a game, but Midway as the developer does add some concern to the concept. The problem with the above video, oddly, comes from the driving scenes. While driving around Vegas might be of some interest, is that really why anyone goes to Vegas? This isn’t San Francisco or some other city known for its roads. Still, if they can mange to capture the seedy side of Vegas well, they just might have a franchise on their hands.
