Early hype has been that Guitar Hero 4 would “revolutionize” music games with an incredible new feature. Are they going to add a keyboard? How about a kazoo? No, sadly not. Instead, the revolutionary new feature is “create a song.”

Who says the DS and iPhone have to be mortal enemies? Perhaps, the beauty of music can bring these two touch friendly devices together? That’s just what three enterprising individuals have tried with their video “iBand.” Two iPhones and one DS playing Electroplankton team up for a nice little tune together. One has to wonder why the PSP was not invited to this impromptu jam session, and hope it wasn’t such an exclusionary reason as it not being touch sensitive.
Whoever said nothing good comes of video games? With the rise of popular music titles such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero, so has there been a rise in the popularity of classic rock music. Everything from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Journey have seen a resurgence in popularity as a younger generation are exposed to the music for the first time. The developers claim it was all part of the plan.

Chrono Trigger is held in reverence by most gaming fans. It was the pinnacle, in many minds, of both the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. It brought together many of the most famed artists in Japan and set them loose on making a classic. Is it flawed? Sure, but those flaws are mostly minor in the way that Pac-Man’s are. They’re easy to nitpick, but easier to ignore in the full scope of the game. This music video is cut together from the PS1 port’s anime cut scenes and it looks beautiful.

Video game soundtracks are becoming more and more something gamers actually pay attention to. Where it once was all synthesized orchestra-style music, games are now becoming big business to debut new bands and cash in on old ones. Oddly enough, sports games such as MLB 2K8 are leading that change.
2K Sports and Pitchfork Media have teamed up on the newest yearly incarnation of the MLB 2K franchise. MLB 2K8 will feature a soundtrack half chosen by 2K Sports and half chosen by Pitchfork Media, with each song designated as a Pitchfork Pick. In addition, 2K Sports will join the 3rd Annual Pitchfork/Windish Agency day party at the SXSW 2008 conference in Austin, Texas on Friday, March 14th. One can only assume this means lots of music, and lots of game demos. (more…)
