It may not sound like it at first, but Ninja Gaiden for the NES is the perfect title to get an anime redo. The game was one of the first to really use cut-scenes to tell a story within what was otherwise a general action platformer. This update is certainly stylish and adds the right amount of new while keeping the iconic shots from the original still in there. It would be neat to see the entire game’s story remade this way. If it has been, pass the info along below.
The Globe and Mail has an interesting column up by Chad Sapieha about the timelessness, or lack thereof, of video games. Basically, his argument is that video games, unlike film and literature, are not timeless. That a game played today will not echo with the same resonance ten years down the line. He has a point.
The problem with such arguments is that many tend to dismiss any game past a generation old. In other words, if it hasn’t been released in the past five years many will argue the title is irrelevant and, more absurd, no longer fun. Seriously? Why do people believe this?
Bionic Commando is shaping up to be a very impressive remake. Now, finally, Capcom is starting to drop some details on it. The verdict? This is no quick cash grab of a remake.
First off, Bionic Commando will be priced at $10 across the PSN, Xbox Live and PC. Not a bad price at all for a completely rebuilt game. Consider that much lesser ports and casual titles have sold for $10 on Xbox Live Arcade. Capcom credits the fans for picking this price point, though one can imagine most fans suggested $5 or free. Yes, it’s another one of those fun and very impressive game remakes using the Source engine. This time it’s the N64 classic Perfect Dark. Now, for the younger gamers out there, please don’t confuse the original Perfect Dark with its sickly sequel Perfect Dark Zero. The original was the spiritual sequel to GoldenEye 007 and it showed with incredible level design and gameplay balancing. They don’t make them like this anymore, well, unless you count remakes like Perfect Dark Source.
Sure, there are prettier and more realistic fighters out there. Still, Street Fighter II HD is a thing to marvel. It’s like the first time you saw Super Mario Bros. as part of Super Mario All-Stars and it felt like an entirely new game. Capcom has managed to take a classic and breathe into not just a burst of new life, but an intoxicating addictive aroma. Any gamer who remembers playing Street Fighter II the first time around in an arcade or pizza parlor will again be hooked. This is the way all remakes should be. Fan inspired remakes are nothing new, but they do seem to be popping up with much higher frequency as of late. Take this one, for instance. One fan is doing a remake to the classic SNES action title Zombies Ate My Neighbors! How does it look? Not bad at all right now. Yes, the level does look a little sparse, but such issues can be tided up later. The 3D engine seems to work well, and the foreground tree effect is a nice touch. Hopefully, unlike some others, this one doesn’t get shut down anytime soon.
