Mexican game market could be worth $1 billion by end of decade

mexican_flag.gif

Yes, that headline is probably shocking to most. There’s a Mexican gaming market? Most Americans probably don’t think of Mexico much as a place to sell superfluous consumer goods such as video games. Research and Markets, on the other hand, claim it’s the beginning of something big.

In their Mexico Video Games Market Report 2007, Research and Markets claims that the Mexican gaming market could hit $1 billion by the end of the decade mostly thanks to YUGS. The report defines YUGS as young unmarried gamers, and there has been a significant rise in their numbers in recent years. (more…)

Image of the day: Street Fighter II HD is a thing of beauty

 street_fighter2_hd.jpg

Sure, there are prettier and more realistic fighters out there. Still, Street Fighter II HD is a thing to marvel. It’s like the first time you saw Super Mario Bros. as part of Super Mario All-Stars and it felt like an entirely new game. Capcom has managed to take a classic and breathe into not just a burst of new life, but an intoxicating addictive aroma. Any gamer who remembers playing Street Fighter II the first time around in an arcade or pizza parlor will again be hooked. This is the way all remakes should be. Video of the day: Balrog fights his way into Street Fighter IV

Balrog, the boxer with a suspicious resemblance to a distorted Mike Tyson (and yes, he was the original M. Bison), has been revealed in a new Street Fighter IV gameplay video. Even more interesting is the level he’s fighting on, which looks like it might be a raft or boat at sea.

Erik chimes in with his views on the recent rash of Street Fighter IV videos, “Capcom gave its fans a little taste of what Street Fighter IV looks like. Fans of the popular series should be impressed with the footage. The 3D animation is smooth and everything flows together. Looks like this time around Capcom will be avoiding the lumpy 3D-ness of Street Fighter EX.”

Street Fighter movie gets cast, apathy

street_fighter_movie.jpgVariety reports that more of the Street Fighter remake cast is coming together. Actually, it should be noted this is not exactly a remake as much as a relaunch of the potential franchise. The announced cast includes Michael Clarke Duncan, Kristen Kreuk and Chris Klein. Yes, those are crickets you hear.

Fourteen years ago the idea of a Street Fighter film sounded like a good idea. The game was wildly popular in arcades and the core cast was widely known by gamers. Fourteen years later is a lifetime in gaming. Many younger gamers don’t even know the characters or their stories anymore. The heyday of fighting games has long passed. Studio executives would be better off making a Guitar Hero game, if popularity was their only concern.

So, why make another Street Fighter movie? In many ways it and Mortal Kombat (also getting a new film) are perfect for the transition to the big screen. They’re notable by name, if not story. They are basically excuses to produce cheap action films with a built-in audience for the opening weekend. Action films don’t exactly sell like they did twenty years ago, at least not on the name of an actor alone. You either need a gimmick (see Crank), or you need a known property (see the rash of comic book films). (more…)

Street Fighter IV searches for Abel bodied

street_fighter4.jpgAs the release date for the newest addition to the Street Fighter franchise draws closer, new screenshots have been released of the newest character to be announced. The blonde brawler who looks like a mix of Balrog and Guile goes by the name of Abel and has no past due to a case of amnesia, a trend used quite a bit in past Street Fighter games.

Video footage courtesy of 1up.com from the AOU 2008 Amusement Expo, which kicked off recently in Japan, shows Abel fighting another new character Viper. The video shows off a few of Abel’s moves but the one to really watch is Viper who appears to be a mix of Vega and Ryu using fireballs, acrobatic kicks, and a serious electrical finishing move. How much is too much Grand Theft Street Fighter?

psn.jpgIn reality, no one should ever complain about more game choices. With that in mind, Grand Theft Auto I & II as well as Street Fighter Alpha are rumored to be coming to the PS3’s PSN sometime soon. This is all according to England’s Official PlayStation Magazine. Of course, that is England’s version of the magazine, and not the official PlayStation magazine of England.

No one should ever complain about more game choices, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anyone will care. In fairness to GTA I & II, they are both excellent games that laid the groundwork for the future blockbuster franchise. They are hardly the games most people know and love, though. Prepare for massive disappointment if you go into these games with little background knowledge. (more…)

Video of the day: Street Fighter Online mouse control

Here’s a bizarre idea. Let’s make an online version of Street Fighter that is played via mouse control. Who’s the target audience? Who knows! Seriously, there was a time when maybe people would casually play Street Fighter in a bar or bowling alley, but the only people playing it anymore are diehard fighting fans. The game simply left everyone else behind. Maybe that’s the rationale behind this simplified control scheme, but really it looks more daunting than casual.
