Video of the day: The Bourne Conspiracy trailer

Files under Video of the Day | Leave a Comment |

The new for The Bourne Conspiracy doesn’t look particularly revolutionary. In fact, it appears to be nothing much more than the assimilation of many different recently popular titles. However, it looks to assimilate them so well. There’s the run, duck, cover and fire of , and what surely appear to be some quick time escape events a la . Still, in looking for games to “borrow” from, a developer could certainly choose worse subjects. It may not redefine the genre, but it at least looks to be a worthy entry.

home.jpgSony’s is that rarest of beasts. Somewhat equivalent to the Loch Ness Monster, one worries that they’re either on the cusp of a great discovery, or just a log in the water. Sony is starting to show some real meat to their service, though, as they’ve announced exclusive Content through for three of their biggest titles.

Warhawk will allow players to meet in a war room inside of before playing it. There, they will be able to use a sand table map of each level to plot strategies. Once ready, players will be able to jump straight into the game. And yes, this is a feature through , not simply a new one through Warhawk. So, you could always go bowling at the last minute, too. ps3.jpgIn a recent BBC News piece Darren Waters revealed many tidbits of joy for Sony fans. First, was some juicy details on the next Motorstorm. More importantly, though, he revealed work a super secret title within Sony that will change the face of gaming in 2009. What could the game be? Well, the one thing known is that it isn’t 2.

Still, what the mega secret title turns out to be isn’t nearly as important as what Sony has started. The first year of Sony’s console was filled with a sense of dread. The format was in a brutal war and it seemed the Xbox 360 was quickly walking away with this console generation confidently in pocket. Then things began to change. How Sony got their groove back

Files under PS3, PSP | 2 Comments |

blurray.jpgThe PlayStation 3 was an undeniable stumble upon launch. Its huge markup over other consoles, even if defendable considering what it packed in, made the system the undeniable leper at the party. Those who did adopt the console in the early days were met by a dearth of games, and even worse, those who didn’t were met by a confused Sony PR message. The focus of the message seemed to be everything but the games, a confused message similar to the one Sony tried with the launch of the PSP.

Still, much like with the PSP, given enough time Sony figured out what they were doing and got their message back on track with, “It’s the games, stupid,” simplicity. Fall 2007 brought several unique exclusives such as Heavenly Sword, : Drake’s Fortune and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Even missteps like Lair were forgivable in the face of a company who finally seemed to be getting it. However, all of these problems relate back in one way or another to the ’s Trojan horse—.

is Sony’s latest in a long line of attempts to establish their own proprietary format as the format of choice for consumers. From Betamax to Mini Disc to Memory Stick to UMD, Sony has a museum of its failed or at least semi-failed formats. certainly could have ended up like the others, but Sony was cleverer, or perhaps just luckier, this time. None of this is to say Sony had no positives on its side. (more…)

puzzle-quest.jpg10) Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

Puzzle games are a dime a dozen these days, and while particularly addictive ones can still get attention, it usually takes something truly innovative that breaks the mold to make everyone sit up and take notice. That’s exactly what this title did.

ratchet-and-clank.jpg9) Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Isn’t it just another romp through the world of Ratchet and Clank? Yes, but it’s also an incredibly polished game to be released in a console’s first year of life. The story might be lacking compared to past installments, but if ever there were a game that took us one step closer to controlling a Pixar cartoon, this is it.

pac-man.jpg8 ) Pac-Man: Championship Edition

The announcement of this game drew laughs from many, including much of the gaming press. Once they played the actual game, however, all opinions changed. It’s the most addictive arcade game in years, and with the minor caveat of the time limits, it’s one of the few “perfect” games released all year. (more…)
